On the other hand, Warzone, the popular battle royale game developed by Activision Blizzard, has been struggling to maintain its player base. In April 2023, Activision Blizzard’s quarterly report revealed a significant drop in monthly users, from 45 billion at the end of the first quarter to 27 million. This decline can be attributed, in part, to the underwhelming performance of Warzone 2 and Overwatch 2.
The Call of Duty (CoD) community strongly believes that Warzone needs to go back to its roots in order to restore its former glory. Many players fondly remember the time when everyone was stuck at home in 2020, playing on Warzone’s original map, Verdansk. It was a period that brought people together and provided a sense of connection during a difficult time.
However, it’s not just nostalgia that drives players’ desire for a return to the original map. The player base has grown frustrated with the direction of the series, with new innovations causing more frustration than excitement. Players want Activision to follow in Fortnite’s footsteps and bring back their favorite map.
Verdansk was replaced by Caldera in 2021, accompanying the release of CoD Vanguard. Despite being gone for three years, players still consider Verdansk to be one of the best gaming experiences they’ve had. The game felt balanced and enjoyable, unlike the current state of Warzone, where it has become a challenge just to complete a single match.
Fortunately, there is hope for disgruntled fans. Verdansk is set to be the primary map for Warzone Mobile, scheduled for release in Spring 2024. Additionally, a leak suggests that the iconic map will make a comeback in CoD 2024.
It’s clear that Warzone players are willing to pay big bucks for a Fortnite OG-style update. One player even expressed their willingness to pay $1,000 for the return of the original map. The demand for a more stable and enjoyable gaming experience is evident, and Activision would be wise to listen to their passionate player base.
