During the CDL Major One in Boston, Toronto faced off against the number one seed, Atlanta FaZe, and emerged victorious not once, but twice on January 28. The Ultra displayed exceptional skills in both Hardpoint and Search and Destroy game modes, remaining undefeated in these categories throughout Major One. They only lost two Control maps, finishing with a remarkable 13-2 map count.
Heading into the 2024 Call of Duty League season, Toronto had experienced a setback with a 5-0 loss to the New York Subliners in the grand finals of CoD Champs 2023. However, the team made strategic acquisitions during the offseason, including 2022 world champion Envoy.
Prior to the CDL Major One, Toronto showcased their true potential by sweeping New York 3-0 on January 19. This dominant performance set the stage for their success in the tournament.
In Boston, Toronto swiftly defeated both the Seattle Surge and Minnesota RØKKR, setting up a winners bracket showdown with Atlanta FaZe. Although FaZe handed Toronto their first map loss, the Ultra ultimately secured a 3-1 series victory, including an impressive 6-1 win in the Search and Destroy game mode.
In the grand finals, Atlanta FaZe had the opportunity for revenge against Toronto, but the outcome mirrored their previous encounter. Toronto’s victories in the Hardpoint and Search and Destroy modes were particularly noteworthy, with both games ending in 6-2 scores in favor of the Ultra.
Throughout CDL Major One, Toronto maintained an exceptional record, winning all six Hardpoint maps and all five Search and Destroy maps. Their only loss came in the Invasion Control map. As a result of their outstanding performance, Toronto Ultra—comprised of CleanX, Insight, Scrap, and Envoy—earned 100 CDL Points and $150,000.
Scrap, the 2023 CDL Rookie of the Year, expressed the team’s determination to move forward from their loss in the grand finals of CoD Champs last year. In a post-match interview, he confidently stated, \”Past is the past, forget that Champs stuff. We’re back on top and we’re coming for the championship all year long.\”
Toronto Ultra’s victory at CDL Major One positions them as a formidable force in the 2024 CDL season. As they prepare for the online qualifiers of Major Two, which commence on Friday, February 16, the team will undoubtedly face heightened competition and have a target on their backs.
