Renowned content creator and former League of Legends caster, Christopher ‘MonteCristo’ Mykles, took to social media to express his concerns about the upcoming broadcast. According to him, the LEC production team has lost a significant number of key members due to the recent layoffs.
Riot Games reportedly let go of all but one observer, as well as the writers, producers, and engineers of the broadcast team. This means that replays, segments, and on-stage issues could be compromised during the show.
Even LEC host Eefje ‘Sjokz’ Depoortere acknowledged the impact of the layoffs, revealing that many of the Rioters who were assisting with the LEC this weekend were among those let go.
The layoffs affected over 500 employees, which accounts for 11% of Riot Games’ workforce. In response, the company has shifted its focus to core titles like League of Legends and VALORANT, while reducing the size and scope of other projects like Legends of Runeterra.
Unfortunately, Riot Forge, the initiative for third-party studios to explore the world of Runeterra, has also been shut down as a result of the layoffs. The final game from Riot Forge will be Bandle Tale, an enchanting crafting RPG set in the mystical world of Yordles.
