The OWCS, a partnership between Blizzard and ESL FACEIT Group, will feature three regions: North America, EMEA, and Asia. The best teams from each region will have the opportunity to compete in two international LAN tournaments in 2024, showcasing their skills on the world stage once again.
Unlike the Overwatch League, which had franchised teams and formal sponsorships, the OWCS will take a different approach. It aims to provide more opportunities for aspiring professional players to become pros and introduce new community platforms to facilitate Overwatch esports operations.
Blizzard’s focus on inclusivity means that the OWCS will be more accessible to players at all levels of the competitive Overwatch community. This community-focused initiative aligns with ESL FACEIT’s mission of creating vibrant and connecting experiences across major esports titles.
The OWCS leagues in North America and EMEA will be operated by EFG, while WDG, a Korean tournament organizer, will run the league in Asia. The structure of the OWCS will promote consistent, always-on events, providing teams with the structure they need to grow and develop.
The journey to the OWCS will begin with open qualifiers and subsequent tournaments in each regional league. The best teams from these tournaments will then face off in Dallas at the first major international tournament of the season. The competitive season will conclude with a finals tournament in Sweden, marking the return of tier-one Overwatch gameplay in Europe.
With the OWCS, Blizzard is ushering in a new era of Overwatch esports while honoring the traditions and passion built by the game’s competitive scene. It’s an exciting time for players and fans alike, as they eagerly await the start of this thrilling new chapter in the world of competitive Overwatch.
